This summer, students from SW!TCH Expeditions switched Dagenham for Sierra Leone in a life-changing experience. The students, who had struggled with mainstream education and were at risk of dropping out, put together a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised just over £12,000 to support their trip to sub-Saharan Africa, thanks to some match funding from Barking and Dagenham council.
Arriving in Freetown, the students spent two weeks in the country, supported by our sister organisation LifeLine Nehemiah Projects. Though far out of their comfort zone, they eagerly mucked in with various local enterprises – from helping teach in schools to digging trenches for farms – and got to experience a completely different way of life while learning crucial new skills from people that live in difficult circumstances.
After returning, the students are now looking to put what they’ve learned into practice, as they continue onto the next stage of their education.
