To honour the work of the Suffragettes, Barking and Dagenham locals came together to launch the knitting project.
As part of this exciting movement, local knitters created decorative tree-warmers and lamp-coats in traditional Suffragette colours. The yarn bombing was then used to decorate Abbey Green and its surroundings, and was done as part of the preparation for Barking Folk Festival. The Sunday event is dedicated to the amazing women of Barking and Dagenham and celebrates ‘the art of protest’. This is part of HerStory celebrations, which mark the 100 year anniversary of when some women won the vote.
